ORIGINS
"Some had families waiting. For others their only family would be the men they bled beside. There were no bands, or flags, no honor guards to welcome them home. They went to war because their country ordered them to, but in the end they fought not for country or their flag, they fought for each other. We who have seen war will never stop seeing it. In the silence of the night we will always hear the screams. So this is our story... For we were soldiers once, and young."

The military transport helicopter landed just outside the base, rotor wash kicking up clouds of snow. A human wearing black and silver combat armor and a full helm with a mirrored visor stepped out, proceeding to the door where an ONI agent was waiting. "Right this way, Lieutenant," he said by way of greeting, escorting her inside the ONI facility, the last human outpost on Earth. "How did your mission go?"

The figure just looked at him for a moment, then shook its head.

"Sri Lanka has fallen, then." The agent sighed. "That just leaves Antarctica itself. It won't be long before they come here."

A nod.

"General Landry has given the OK for the Chronos Project to move forward."

For the first time, the soldier spoke, in a distinctly female voice. "He must be getting desperate."

"That is an understatement of unimaginable magnitude, sir." They stopped at a door. "He's expecting you."

Opening the door, the soldier snapped to attention. "General! First Lieutenant Amber Karin reporting, sir!"

"At ease, soldier," the elderly general responded in a rasping voice. "And for Pete's sake, take off that helmet, I feel like I'm talking to my mirror."

The officer removed her helmet, revealing a woman in her late twenties, with short red hair and a certain hard beauty about her. "I regret to report, General, that the Sri Lanka campaign was a disaster. Gunnery Sergeant Oats, Agent Quinn, and Colonel Tyke were killed in defense of the military base, along with most of my Marines. My best guess is that we have at most three months before the demons realize where we're hiding."

"I have given my approval for the Chronos proposal, if that's what you're pushing for," Landry replied. "The quantum lasers are being set up as we speak."

The Chronos Project was a proposal that Lt. Karin had put forward eight years ago, when it was becoming increasingly obvious that the demons had grown too powerful to be stopped through conventional means. Karin's idea had been to use the then-risky portal technology which had started all this to send the last remaining Special Ops team back in time to the beginning of the outbreak, to change the past to an alternate timeline where the humans found the Engine of God before the demons did. Deemed too risky, the Project had been shelved until recently.

Landry leaned forward, resting his elbows on his desk. "You do realize that I can't spare any men to send back with you. As the last Ops soldier, you'll be on your own there."

"I understand. As I recall, the mercenaries originally sent in by the Company formed into loose fireteams - I can try to recruit some personnel from there."

Landry sighed. "Very well, Lieutenant. The transport team is waiting for you."

On her way to the departure area, Karin stopped at the armory. Deciding on an M6C semiautomatic pistol and M-90 shotgun, she stocked up on ammo before proceeding to the area. Once there, she stepped inside the re-engineered armored drop capsule and sealed the hatch. "Ready for departure."

With a loud roaring sound, the main quantum lasers fired, creating a shimmering oval portal. The drop capsule's emergency rockets fired, propelling the pod forward and through the shimmering area.

With a deafening roar, the drop capsule burst into view, pieces flaking away before the pod smashed into the side of an abandoned house, sending its lone occupant sprawling. Picking herself up, Karin was forced to draw her pistol and fire as a Grunt sprang out of nowhere. Stepping over the corpse, she exited the alleyway onto a street filled with gunfire as several humans wearing Company emergency armor sprinted from door to door and savage creatures sprange from concealment to attack. "This is where the fun begins," Karin said grimly, proceeding out into the war-torn streets...

Kneeling over the dead Archville, Amber carefully extracted a sample of the creatures blood, then stored the vial in a padded case along with several other samples. Each one was labelled with a different demon's name. Slinging the bag over her back, Amber turned on her tape recorder. "I have the last sample, from Demon Type 11. Next step, compare DNA samples for a unique demon gene that the T bacteriophage can target." Hearing a sound, she dropped the recorder and grabbed her MP5. When no large bloodthirsty monster jumped out of the shadows, she set the gun back down. "Damn. You're getting too jumpy, Amber."
