I've been doing some tests with the LMG (light machinegun) and AR (assault rifle), and have roughly determined their hit percentage. I've also attempted to log their damage rates, and have come to the tentative conclusion it is possible to achieve 'critical hits' (ie. occasional shots that do significantly more damage than the regular damage rates of a given weapon). I say this because I've been consistently scoring hits with the LMG to the effect of 9-15 damage (as has already been noted in the wiki entry) but no outliers as described by the users above. The AR, on the other hand, seems to achieve damage rates in the vicinity of the 15-25 (highest recorded was 24 but I only did a few dozen hits) area. When associated with the LMG's hit rate of 60% (108 tests - 66 hits - 324 bullets fired) we get an average damage output of 2.4 per bullet fired - more generally that equates to an average of 7.2 XP per click. For the AR, whose hit rate is 50% (108 tests - 52 hits - 540 bullets fired), we get an average damage output of 2 per bullet - or an average of 10 XP per click.
This data doesn't incorporate the long term effects of ammo usage, but I think it's plain to see that those mercenaries who lack the bodybuilding skills, and those on long range patrols far from resupply, will get more out of each bullet if they stick with the LMG. In large confrontations where misses can still hit other monsters, however, the AR handily bypasses it's 50% hit rate and becomes much more effective (although its rapid use of ammunition is still an issue). - Matlack 22:47, 4 June 2007 (PDT)
