FAQ
From OutbreakWiki
Outbreak is currently in open beta phase. Any information contained within this FAQ is subject to change.
Important Terminology
1. Merc= Mercenary, or human controlled player.
2. Pker= Player Killer, a merc who kills other mercs.
- Note: Player killing is no longer possible in Outbreak. Forms of griefing, such as repeatedly attacking building security, are bannable offenses, as per the TOS.
3. UD= Urban Dead, a MMORPG with a zombie killing theme.
4. RNG= Random Number Generator. This decides, through percentages, whether you find something in a search, hit a target, and how much damage you inflict. The percentages can be affected by certain skills, weapons, etc.
5. Nathan= Main God of Outbreak, also known as "The Architect". The person we all can thank for creating Outbreak and striving to make it even better.
Basic Information
What is Outbreak?
Outbreak is an massive multiplayer online role playing game, where mercenaries controlled by human players, like yourself, fight against hordes of demons.
I just started my game. What do I do?
Find a method of gaining credits. You can fight demons with a pistol, shotgun, knife, chainsaw, or your own martial art skills. In the future, heavier weapons (machine gun, flamethrower) will be available. You can also gain experience from healing people with MedKits, or reviving them with certain syringes. When you decide to log off, log off inside a barricaded, well-populated building.
How do I search?
Enter a building, and click the search button. When a screen comes up, simply click the little boxes inside. You can click each box once every time you enter that search screen. You can do this unlimited times with the building never running out of supplies.
Where do I find weapons, ammunition, fuel and medical supplies?
Pistols are found in Police Stations and shotguns are found in Forts. Ammunition for the pistol (bullets) and the shotgun (shells) can be found in both Forts and Police Stations. You find knives in Residences (Cyan-colored buildings). MedKits and syringes are found in hospitals. Chainsaws and fuel for them are found in Fire Stations.
What is armor? What does it do? Where do I find it?
Armor is your primary defense against demons. It acts as a "shield", reducing your armor total rather than depleting your health. Armor fragments are found in Police Stations and Forts.
What other items are in this game, and where can I find them?
In the game, you can also find spray cans, food (restores 1hp), radios, flashlights, and GPS units. Spray cans are found in Residences (Cyan buildings), food in Commercial buildings (purple), radios in Police Stations and Fire Stations, flashlights in Hospitals and Residences, and GPS units in Commercial buildings.
What are GPS's and why are they so important?
GPS units show you your coordinates with respect to the northwest corner of the city. These are necessary to effectively communicate your position to others, and coming to others when they call for help. While giving the name of a building you're near can be helpful, coordinates are the easiest and surest way to convey your location. You turn a GPS unit on by selecting it from the "Item" dropdown menu and clicking "On".
What is wrong with my radio?
Due to extreme radiation emitted by demon portals, outgoing radio transmissions are scrambled. When you are standing in a room with a demon portal (marked by a red asterisk [*]), your broadcasts will be extremely garbled.
- For example: You broadcast: "There are a lot of demons at 5°S, 2°E". Everyone sees: "T----- a--- -l---- ----d-mons----- --S----"
To avoid this, step away from the portal before you broadcast.
How do i type an action line?
It's fairly simple. Typing in the "Speech Box", or whatever you kids are calling it these days, start of the by entering /me followed by the action you want your merc to do.
EXAMPLE:
Typing: /me walked into the the Smoke shop and bought a pound of "Mellow Moonshine" for his meerschaum calabash
Results in: sloop walked into the the Smoke shop and bought a pound of "Mellow Moonshine" for his meerschaum calabash
Advanced Gameplay
What is the radio? What does it do?
The radio is your means of long range communication in Outbreak. Over the radio you can communicate with all players in the same city who have tuned into the same channel as you. Channel 01 is considered the general channel. Some fire teams use channel 02 as a more efficient channel in terms of transmitting information. The Fire Team channel speaks to your fire team alone, and is very useful. Turn your radio on by simply selecting a channel from the "ch." dropdown menu.
Fire Team? What's that?
A Fire Team is a group of mercenaries working together for a similar cause. They often have a headquarters where all the mercs stay at night. They will be able to do missions together.
What are demon portals?
Demon portals are areas of the map marked with a star. On timed intervals, they spawn demons which spread throughout the map. They cannot be destroyed or affected, yet. Nathan has stated in the future we will be able to temporarily freeze them. Gatekeepers have been seen creating portals, although how is unknown. Mercenaries must work together to take out large clumps of demons. It is important to note medkits only heal one health inside portals.
I have credits; where do I buy skills?
You can buy skills at Company training facilities: buildings marked with a T. These training centers charge high prices though, so be warned. Also, if a training center is taken over by demons, it will relocate randomly in the city.
I keep hearing about supply depots. What do they do
Supply depots are where players can purchase ammunition, armor, other basic materials, as well as special items. They are marked with an S. Unless you are in a rush, don't purchase items that can otherwise be easily found by searching. The Item of the Month can be purchased from supply depots. Eventually more items will be available exclusively in supply depots, including Class 3-1 helipasses. Also, if a supply depot is taken over by demons, it will relocate randomly in the city.
Helipasses?
Other than the Class 4 & 5 cities Hell's Gate City and Piedmont, no cities are accessible yet. Eventually these lower class (higher difficulty) cities will be open if you have the proper helicopter pass. These cities are rumored to be very difficult to survive in.
Another mercenary annoyed me. Can I kill him?
No.
What does Faction Standing mean?
Faction standing indicates how much demons hate you and your fellow mercenaries respect you. Killing demons, healing mercenaries, reviving mercenaries, and doing missions increases it. Demons will target you more with a higher standing, but you need high standings to do certain future missions. Another downside of higher faction standing is that the Company esteems your ability too great to receive credits for attacking weaker demons.
note:all players faction standing have been set to 1000 (perfect) and the faction standing elements have been taken out of the game. source:[1]
What does building security do?
Building security is in place so players can rest at night without demons killing them. No matter what the security level, unlike in UD, survivors can enter a building.
What are those buildings with For Sale signs on them?
Those buildings are property that be purchased with rocks. There are two types of property available for purchase: homes (2 rocks buys you the entire building) and apartments (1 rock buys you a single unit in the building). These buildings lose the money symbol if they are bought, and there is a new message stating the owner of the property. Ownership of property cannot be changed or transferred at this time.
What are rocks?
Rocks are the things you use to buy property. $10.00 buys you 1 rock.
